Don Quixote – Chapter XXII – Summary

Don Quixote sees a group of prisoners in chains on their way to the galleys.

Everyone else thinks:
“Criminals. System working as intended.”

Don Quixote thinks:
“Nope. People in chains = injustice. Let’s go.”

He starts interviewing them one by one.
The answers are… mixed

  • one “sang” (meaning: confessed under pressure)
  • one is creatively guilty
  • one is basically a professional criminal

Sancho stands there thinking:
“This will not end well.”

Don Quixote still reaches his conclusion:
👉 Not free = must be freed.

So he does the most Don Quixote thing possible:
attacks the guards and frees them.

In his head:
heroic rescue, justice served, applause incoming.

In reality:
the prisoners thank him by… throwing stones at him and robbing him 😅

Sancho:
“Told you.”

Don Quixote:
“Ungrateful world.”

👉 Core idea:

Good intentions + zero reality check = chaos

Or in one line:
Intent is noble. Outcome is… very human.
