Don Quixote – Chapter I – summary and analysis
Feels like the birth of a new reality – not madness at first, but a quiet decision to live inside a story instead af a world
We are introduced to a man in La Mancha – a fairly ordinary, somewhat aging nobleman (hidalgo) living a simple life:
- he lives modestly
- owns only a few possessions
- lives with a housekeeper, a niece, and a servant
But something stands out:
He is obsessed with books of chivalry.
What happens
- He reads so much that he:
- sleeps too little
- loses his grip on reality
- Eventually, he begins to believe that the world of knights is real
The transformation
He decides to:
- become a knight
- set out on adventures
- revive the ideals of chivalry
And he begins to act on it:
- repairs an old suit of armor
- prepares his horse (which he names Rocinante)
- gives himself the name Don Quixote de La Mancha
The idea of love
A knight needs a lady:
👉 He chooses an ordinary woman (Aldonza Lorenzo)
👉 but in his imagination she becomes:
Dulcinea del Toboso – an idealized, almost princess-like figure
