Don Quixote – Chapter XXXIV – Summary:
He didn’t lose her when she changed.
He lost her the moment he stopped trusting
and started measuring.
This part is almost uncomfortable to read, because it’s not medieval anymore.
It’s basically modern relationships under a microscope.
And Cervantes just sits there like:
“Yeah… this is what happens.”
Longer reflections:
He wanted truth.
He got theatre.
She performs loyalty.
The friend performs betrayal.
And he… performs understanding.
Everyone knows.
No one says it.
And somehow that’s worse.
What’s really happening in these pages:
This is the most brutal part.
Not the affair.
Not even the deception.
It’s this:
They build a fake reality that becomes more stable
than the truth itself.
Camila plays the role perfectly.
Lotario plays along.
Anselmo watches… and chooses to believe the version that hurts him least.
So the “experiment” continues —
but now it’s no longer about truth.
It’s about maintaining the illusion they’ve all created together.
And this is the turning point:
At first, Anselmo forces reality to break.
Now, reality fights back by becoming unreadable.
He wanted certainty.
Instead, he ends up in a world where:
- Truth looks like lies
- Lies look like virtue
- And performance replaces reality
The quiet horror (this is the key):
Anselmo actually gets what he asked for:
He tests her.
He observes.
He collects evidence.
And still… he understands nothing.
Sometimes it feels that people back than had deeper sense of feelings. Maybe because there were no distractions as we have today with constant notifications. Maybe because people were most connected to themselves..
Sad that test ended with the death.
Even sadder that such test was needed.
Indeed there are things/situations/etc which require tests, but always should be kept in mind if that damaged diamond in the end will have any increased value.
Fantastic interpretation.
Maybe that is the real tragedy of the chapter.
Not that people fail each other —
but that once trust becomes an experiment, everyone starts changing shape inside it.
